A NEW SERVICE'S COIN TRADITION

The U.S. Space Force stood up in December 2019 as the sixth branch of the U.S. military. Many early Guardians transferred in from the Air Force, bringing Air Force coin conventions with them. But the Space Force has actively developed its own visual identity — the distinctive delta symbol, the silver/blue/black color palette, the modern typography — and that identity is now showing up on Space Force coins as a clear visual departure from the Air Force look.

We've built coins across the Space Force at squadron, delta, and field command level. Because the tradition is still being established, units have meaningful latitude in how their coins look. We work with that — honoring the developing conventions while leaving room for unit-specific identity.

SQUADRON COINS

Space Force squadron coins follow the same basic structure as Air Force squadron coins: the squadron patch centered on the front, squadron designation curved around it, mission identifier on the back. Where they differ is in the visual signature — Space Force squadrons typically incorporate the delta symbol prominently, lean toward darker plating finishes (antique silver, black nickel, polished black), and use the Space Force's distinctive typography. Many squadrons are operational units (space operations, orbital warfare, cyber, intelligence) and their coins reflect the tactical nature of the mission.

DELTA COINS

Deltas are the Space Force's operational organizations (roughly equivalent to Air Force wings), each focused on a specific mission area: missile warning (Delta 4), cyber operations, orbital warfare, electromagnetic warfare, intelligence, and others. Delta coins typically feature the delta number prominently with the mission identifier, the delta patch, and sometimes a stylized space or orbital motif. Delta CC coins are premium command pieces used as on-the-spot recognition.

FIELD COMMAND & STAFF COINS

The three Space Force field commands — Space Operations Command (SpOC), Space Training and Readiness Command (STARCOM), and Space Systems Command (SSC) — each have their own coin programs at command staff level. These are typically premium pieces (antique gold, dual-plated, 2.25"+) used as field command-level recognition. HQ USSF coins follow similar conventions at the headquarters level. STARCOM training graduation coins are emerging as a distinct tradition for Guardian initial training.

DESIGNING FOR A NEW TRADITION

Because Space Force coin traditions are still developing, there's more room for distinctive design language than in older services' coins. The standard Space Force visual elements — the delta, the orbital motif, the silver/blue/black palette, the modern sans- serif typography — all play well in the medium. Many units incorporate satellite silhouettes, orbital paths, or constellation references as distinctive identifiers. We help units develop visual language that reads as clearly Space Force while staying true to the specific mission.
