COMMON FIRST RESPONDER COIN ORDERS

DEPARTMENT / AGENCY COINS

The standard-issue identifier — usually round, dual-plated, with badge or shield art and motto. Issued to every sworn officer or firefighter on the roster.

POLICE CHALLENGE COINS

Custom coins for police departments, sheriff's offices, state troopers, and federal agencies. Badge art, agency seal, unit identifiers, and commemorative pieces.

FIREFIGHTER COINS

Fire house coins, station coins, engine and ladder company pieces, fire chief coins. Maltese cross designs, helmet art, station numbers.

EMS COINS

Custom EMS coins for ambulance services, hospital-based EMS, paramedic graduations, and flight medic units. Star of Life designs and crew commemoratives.

PROMOTION COINS

For sergeant, lieutenant, captain, chief promotions. Often one-off or very low quantity, premium finish. The kind of piece that goes in the office shadow box.

MEMORIAL COINS

Honoring fallen officers, firefighters, or EMS personnel. We handle these with the gravity they deserve — extra care, extra patience, no rush.

CITIZEN / CHIEF'S AWARD

Recognition coins handed out by the chief for citizen service, life-saving acts, or outstanding performance. Usually higher finish, smaller run.

ACADEMY GRADUATION COINS

Custom coins for graduating recruit classes. Often the first official department coin they receive — the one with the class number on the back.

MUTUAL AID COMMEMORATIVES

When jurisdictions work major incidents together — joint coins commemorating the response. Combined department seals, incident dates.

FIRST RESPONDER CHALLENGE COIN TRADITION

The challenge coin tradition crossed from the military into first responder culture decades ago and has been growing ever since. Today, most large police departments, fire houses, and EMS agencies issue some form of unit or agency coin — and many run their own promotion, recognition, and memorial coin programs alongside the standard-issue piece. We build coins for all of it: police challenge coins for sworn officers and detectives, firefighter coins for engine and ladder companies, EMS coins for ambulance crews and flight medics, and joint commemoratives for the mutual-aid responses that bring agencies together.

POLICE CHALLENGE COINS

Police departments use challenge coins for unit identifiers, promotion ceremonies, K-9 unit pieces, SWAT team commemoratives, citizen awards from the chief, and academy graduation. The standard police coin centers the department badge or seal on the front with the agency motto and city / county name on the back. Custom shapes (shields, six-point stars for sheriff's offices, state outlines) are common and don't cost extra. Antique silver and antique gold plating are the most-ordered finishes for police pieces.

FIREFIGHTER COINS

Firefighter coins lean into Maltese cross designs, helmet imagery, axe silhouettes, and station-specific identifiers. Many fire houses do an individual engine and ladder company piece on top of the department coin. We've built coins for everything from small-town volunteer departments to major metro fire departments — same process, same proof turnaround. Common ask: a thicker (3.5mm or 4mm) coin with strong antique bronze relief, so the design reads clearly when the piece is on the bar.

EMS AND DISPATCH COINS

Star of Life designs anchor most EMS coins — agency name across the top, "EMS" or "Paramedic" across the bottom, sometimes with the rod of Asclepius integrated into the design. Hospital-based EMS, ambulance services, flight medic teams, and 911 dispatch centers all carry their own coin variations. Dispatch coins often feature headset or microphone iconography paired with the agency seal.
